What is spent nuclear fuel?

Rachel Maddow explains the process of dealing with spent nuclear reactor fuel rods and the dangers inherent in their storage. Frank Von Hippel, nuclear physicist and co-director of the Program on Science and Global Security at Princeton University, discusses the perilous situation in Japan.

The McGlynn:  From Dan, “watched it last night…she did a great job on this issue.

After watching the show,  I came away with the understanding that there really is nothing that they can do until things cool down…just a nightmare.

It also made me think of the Palisades plant.  The picture says it all:

I also heard an interview on the radio with someone from the Palisades plant today….he was quite confident about the Palisades plant…it has two back up generators that run on diesel so that it can not lose electricity.

I wanted to jump through the radio and ask him….don’t you think that is the same confidence that the Japanese operators had about their own plant?!

Why the hell they put this plant on the shores of Lake Michigan is beyond comprehension….largest body of fresh water in the world.”

There is the same type reactor, develpoed by GE,  in Monroe, Mi. on Lake Eire

The world is one big risk bucket……
Coal Dust to breath or radioactive dust?

Carbon Monoxide or falling birds from windmill blades?

That light switch left on or turn it off when you are not needing it?

    So many questions…………….
Hey, I wonder, since Japan is the third largest economy in the world and they are unable to consume as much petro right now…. why hasent the cost of a barrel dropped?
