Tell the Catholic Church hierarchy

Tell the Catholic Church hierarchy: Stop donating to NOM!

Just weeks ago, HRC uncovered the National Organization for Marriage’s political strategy to “drive a wedge between gays and blacks” and manipulate the Latino community to slow the advance of marriage equality.

Now we’ve discovered that the Catholic Church is a major source of financial support for NOM.

The Knights of Columbus alone, a Catholic fraternal society, have admitted to donating $1.4 million to NOM – and it’s believed that Catholic Church leaders and organizations have chipped in millions more.

NOM’s positions and tactics are out of step not just with the majority of Americans, but also the majority of American Catholics. The Church should cease its support and collaboration with NOM immediately.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the highest ranking bishop in the U.S., needs to hear from you. By sending your letter, you’ll be helping dial up the direct public pressure on one of NOM’s biggest funders.

Tell Cardinal Dolan to spread the message that all people are loved. Tell His Eminence to denounce race-baiting and anti-gay animus by ending financial support to NOM.

Go to sign the Letter:

End financial support to NOM

Your Eminence,

As a supporter of the Human Rights Campaign, I am writing to ask that you and affiliated organizations such as the Knights of Columbus end your financial support of the fringe group known as the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) — and publicly renounce their extremist tactics.

Sadly, our evidence shows that NOM has used its funding to exploit people of color and the children of gay parents in this country.

The Catholic Church professes to “promote the greater good which the Church offers humankind,” and the great majority of Catholics support the freedom to marry. The Public Religion Research Institute recently found that 71 percent of American Catholics support civil marriage for same-sex couples.

Increasingly, church-going Catholics question why hospitals, soup kitchens, and even parish churches are being closed for lack of funds at the same time their Church leadership is spending millions of dollars to divide families.

Please immediately stop funding NOM. In doing so, you will send a resounding message that race-baiting, ethnic exploitation, division, and anti-gay campaigns have no place in the Church, or in America.

Thank you,
