Saturday Night Massacre: Obama Axes PJ Crowley for Telling the Truth about Bradley Manning

By: Phoenix Woman Sunday March 13, 2011 9:41 am

It says something about the desire of the Obama Administration to try to quietly and without consequence destroy anyone who makes any challenges to their shameful mistreatment of an alleged whistleblower that they waited to make their move, not just for the usual news black hole that is a typical part of the American weekend, but for a weekend when a single global event — the ongoing catastrophes in Japan — would consume what media and public attention exists:

P.J. Crowley is abruptly stepping down as State Department spokesman under pressure from the White House, according to senior officials familiar with the matter, because of controversial comments he made about the Bradley Manning case.

Crowley will step down as early as Sunday afternoon, the officials said, because White House officials are furious about his suggestion that the Obama administration is mistreating Manning, the Army private who is being held in solitary confinement in Quantico, Virginia, under suspicion that he leaked highly classified State Department cables to the website Wikileaks.

Speaking to a small group at MIT last week, Crowley was asked about allegations that Manning is being tortured and kicked up a firestorm by answering that what is being done to Manning by Defense Department officials “is ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid.”

Geez, a new Saturday Night Massacre! How fricking Nixonian can you get? What’s next, secretly bombing Cambodia?

Bear in mind, Crowley was saying this as someone who thinks Manning should be held and put on trial for whistleblowing — erm, leaking. But he has the brains and morality to realize that if getting actual information out of Manning is a goal, torturing PFC Manning is not how you go about achieving that goal.

With Crowley’s Ouster, Obama Fully Owns the Torture of Bradley Manning

Barack Obama has forced State Department Spokesman P.J. Crowley to resign from his position after Crowley dared to tell the truth about the Administration’s torture of Bradley Manning.

Late last week Crowley called the Department of Defense’s treatment of Manning – including severe isolation and forced nakedness – “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid.” President Obama, when asked about Crowley’s statement in a press conference on Friday, sided with the Pentagon, saying that the abuse of Bradley Manning was “meeting our basic standards.”

Let there be no question: with Crowley’s ouster, President Obama now owns the abuse and torture of Bradley Manning.

The McGlynn: And the crime of torture!

In today’s press conference with President Obama, ABC Reporter Jake Tapper asked Obama about Hillary Clinton spokesman PJ Crowley’s condemnation of the Department of Defense’s mistreatment of Bradley Manning. Crowley said at a forum last night, “What is happening to Manning is ridiculous, counterproductive and stupid, and I don’t know why the DoD is doing it.”

Obama brushed off the question, saying that he had spoken to the Pentagon and was assured that Manning’s treatment is “meeting our basic standards.” As Marcy Wheeler noted, “Of COURSE Manning’s treatment meets DOD’s standards. Using nudity to force helplessness has been standard for 9 years now.”

Below is the full transcript of President Barack Obama taking ownership of the torture of Bradley Manning.

Tapper: The State Department Spokesman PJ Crowley said the treatment of Bradley Manning by the Pentagon is “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid,” and I’m wondering if you agree with that. Thank you sir.

Obama: With respect to Private Manning, I have actually asked the Pentagon whether or not the procedures that have been taken in terms of his confinement are appropriate and are meeting our basic standards. They assure me that they are. I can’t go into details about some of their concerns, but some of this has to do with Private Manning’s safety as well.

Tapper: Do you disagree with PJ Crowley?

Obama: I think I gave you an answer to the substantive issue.

OK, everyone, now you all know. Obama’s standard for the treatment of a prisoner of the United States includes the following: imprisonment for months, years without being charged with any crime, solitary confinement for months (years?)for no reason, and stripping a prisoner naked for hours at a time on the ridiculous and false justification that the authorities are protecting him from himself, because, you know, that underwear is dangerous.

Pancha Tattva dasa

They’re making an example of Manning to scare anyone else who would even think of pulling back the curtain again. They’re sending a message. They are despicable fiends, and Obama’s in cahoots with them.

No, Obama is one of them. Obama has prosecuted more whistle blowers than any president in recent times.
