President Obama told me he wants to see a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.

Dear The McGlynn,

I had a crazy thing happen last night. President Obama told me he wants to
see a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.

I’m not kidding.

The President made a special appearance on a social news site called Reddit
to take questions from the general public, so I asked him what we’ve all been
wondering: “What are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of
money in politics?”

I couldn’t believe it when he responded to my question by calling for a
movement to overturn Citizens United and to do away with super PACs – right in
the middle of election season!  Whether you agree with Obama’s policies
or not, you’ve got to hand it to the guy when he takes a stand against big
money.

Sign this letter to Obama and show your support for his bold
statement in favor of overturning Citizens United.  And let’s ensure he takes
these online statements onto the campaign trail.

My simple hope is that Obama’s response to my question helps to spark a
national conversation about reforming our democratic process.  Major news
outlets have already picked it up, but we need to keep the conversation
alive.

This is what he wrote:

“Money has always been a factor in politics, but we are seeing something
new in the no-holds barred flow of seven and eight figure checks, most
undisclosed, into super-PACs; they fundamentally threaten to overwhelm
the political process
over the long run and drown out the voices of
ordinary citizens…
I think we need to seriously consider
mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United
(assuming the Supreme Court doesn’t revisit it).
Even if the amendment
process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and
help apply pressure for change.”

Mobilizing voters behind a constitutional amendment process
is an uphill battle that will require support from liberals, conservatives, and
independents.  Over 2,000 people voted for my question (thank you), which is one
reason President Obama chose it among hundreds of others.  Now it’s time
to ratchet up the pressure even further in order to push this conversation into
the national spotlight.

Join me in supporting the President’s statement and urge him to
bring this conversation to the Democratic National Convention next
week.

It’s our shared goal to foster a national debate on the role of money in
politics.  The next step is for President Obama to turn his online talk
into off-line action.

Let’s unPAC our elections once and for all.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Merkelson, United Republic and the entire unPAC Team

It’s worth taking a step back from the partisan warfare of this election
season to acknowledge a strong statement that we can all get behind.

Join me in voicing support for Obama’s call to overturn Citizens
United and to do away with super PACs. Let’s turn this online talk into off-line
action.
