Michigan: Oppose the assault on teacher retirement

Below is an email from Beverley Rannow, a MoveOn member in Holland, Michigan, who created a petition at, a new site that allows anyone to start their own online petition. If you have concerns or feedback about this petition, click here.

Dear Michigan MoveOn member,

For more than a year the Republican State Legislature has attacked the retirement of Michigan educators and other state employees in a variety of ways.

The latest attack, SB 1040, makes sweeping changes to limit the promised pension benefits received by both active and retired educators. We are calling on senators to oppose this current attack.

That’s why I created a petition to the Michigan State Senate and Governor Rick Snyder on, which says:

Vote NO on SB1040! Current educators should not have to pay even higher out-of-pocket costs to keep the benefits that have been promised to them. And retirees cannot afford for their health insurance premiums to increase, especially in light of the state’s new pension tax.
