Despite local Afghani traditions that discourage women from learning a trade, Roqia became a tailor to help support her parents and six younger siblings.
Today — with the help of microfinance loans — Roqia runs her own small sewing business.

Women comprise 70 percent of the world’s poor. Giving them the financial tools to raise their incomes can pull entire families out of poverty.

Roqia’s opportunity came three years ago, when she bought her first sewing machine with a microfinance loan — small loans made available to the poor. She now has two machines, a thriving business, a student and has raised the quality of life for her family.
