Dear The McGlynn

General David Petraeus is waging war on two fronts – one in Afghanistan and one in the media. He’s trying to persuade the American public that we are in Afghanistan to protect civilians and that the current military course is, as he put it in today’s Washington Post, “fundamentally sound.” The facts say something else entirely.

Write a letter to your local editor and share the facts with your neighbors.

Last week, a United Nations report found that civilian casualties rose 31 percent during the first six months of 2010 compared to last year – and last year set a record.

Sadly, the largest increase in the rising casualties are among women and children. In fact, the U.S. forces have for years tried to hide civilian casualties from public attention, as the Wikileaks War Diary documents. Is this protection?

While the blame for the majority of these casualties rests squarely with the Taliban and other insurgents, it’s clear the U.S. presence is a catalyst for attacks on non-combatants.

Join us to spread the truth during the general’s media blitz.  By writing a letter to the editor of your local paper, we will help spread the word that more troops will not bring more peace.  We cannot let the faulty logic of ongoing war go unchallenged by the truth of the enormous cost of war.  While public attention is on Afghanistan, this is a moment for our call for diplomacy and an end to militarism.

Thank you for joining us in waging peace!
