3 Times Jon Stewart Stopped Making Jokes

Comedy Central announced Tuesday that, after 15 years, Jon Stewart will soon step down as the host of The Daily Show.

Stewart is known as a skilled comedian and political satirist who repeatedly dismissed his show as “fake news.” His oversized impact on the culture stemmed not from his ability to tell jokes, but from his ability to connect with people on an emotional level on things that were really important.

Most of the time, these earnest moments came in bits and pieces between gags. But a few times, Stewart stopped trying to be funny all together:

9/11: “I wanted to tell you why I grieve but why I don’t despair.”

Charlie Hebdo: “Our goal tonight is not to make sense of this because there is no sense to this.”

Eric Garner: “If comedy is tragedy plus time, I need more f*ucking time.”
